{"id":209,"date":"2025-12-20T11:54:33","date_gmt":"2025-12-20T11:54:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digespedi.us.edu.pl\/?p=209"},"modified":"2026-01-09T22:53:42","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T22:53:42","slug":"sfn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digespedi.us.edu.pl\/index.php\/2025\/12\/20\/sfn\/","title":{"rendered":"Silesian Science Festival Katowice: Etymology workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>At the <a href=\"https:\/\/slaskifestiwalnauki.pl\/en\/home\"><strong>9th Silesian Science Festival Katowice<\/strong><\/a>, our team member <a href=\"https:\/\/digespedi.us.edu.pl\/index.php\/jan-zalega\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"168\">Jan Zalega<\/a>, together with Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/neolinguists.us.edu.pl\/index.php\/2021\/10\/01\/dr_joanna_ryszka\/\">Joanna Ryszka<\/a> and Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/neolinguists.us.edu.pl\/index.php\/2019\/10\/01\/dr-aleksandra-nocon-honorary-member\/\">Aleksandra Noco\u0144<\/a>, conducted a workshop titled \u201c<strong>Hey, That Sounds Similar! A few words and exercises about the etymology of words<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim of the workshop was to introduce younger audience to the concept of <strong>etymology<\/strong>, how languages relate to one another, and how they form <strong>language families<\/strong>. Additionally, scholars introduced the participants to the notion of <strong>loanwords<\/strong>, their definition, and their most prominent types. The workshop continued with a lively discussion and enthusiastic participation in an etymology quiz. After the presentation and Q&amp;A session, participants were divided into groups whose task was to come up with the most interesting etymology of a given word, and later to determine its origin.
