{"id":537,"date":"2025-03-24T12:32:07","date_gmt":"2025-03-24T12:32:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digespedi.us.edu.pl\/?p=537"},"modified":"2026-01-11T12:36:20","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T12:36:20","slug":"omis-2025-presentation-on-hedge-phrases-in-open-source-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digespedi.us.edu.pl\/index.php\/2025\/03\/24\/omis-2025-presentation-on-hedge-phrases-in-open-source-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"OMIS 2025: Presentation on hedge phrases in open source projects"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>At the &#8220;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/omis.us.edu.pl\/index.php\/2024\/12\/17\/omis-2025\/\">Oriental meetings in Sosnowiec<\/a><\/strong>&#8221; conference in Sosnowiec, Poland, our members <a href=\"https:\/\/digespedi.us.edu.pl\/index.php\/agnieszka-ziora\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"64\">Agnieszka Ziora<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/digespedi.us.edu.pl\/index.php\/dominik-gegotek\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"162\">Dominik G\u0119gotek<\/a> presented a paper titled <em><strong>Hedging in Multicultural Discourse Based on an Open Source Project &#8211; Zotero<\/strong><\/em>. The main goal of this paper was the analysis of the <strong>multicultural online discourse<\/strong>, with special emphasis on the phenomenon of <strong>hedging<\/strong>. The study was based on one chosen open source project \u2013 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zotero.org\/\">Zotero<\/a><\/strong>. In the theoretical part of the presentation concepts such as hedging, <strong>politeness<\/strong>, negative and positive <strong>face <\/strong>were presented and described. The practical part of the presentation focused on the analysis of hedges in source code reviews and comments. The methodology included qualitative and quantitative analysis. The paper showed that discussions in the Zotero project are conducted through <strong>turn-taking<\/strong> and anyone can take part in the discussion &#8211; including both volunteers and coordinators. <strong>Hedge phrases<\/strong> were abundant in the messages of volunteers and coordinators alike. The most popular hedge phrases found were: &#8216;I think&#8217;, &#8216;probably&#8217;, &#8216;seems&#8217; and &#8216;maybe&#8217;.
