Apart from the report in Polish and in English, the dataset contains aggregated data and the questionnaire developed for the study.

Our respondents were 180 students enrolled in English-major programmes (with linguistics or literary studies as leading disciplines) at a large public university in Poland, and the focus of the study was on the development of academic writing skills.

The main findings of the study are as follows:

Over one-third of the respondents do not use GenAI for study purposes; those who do use it rely on it mainly for proofreading, summarising, and vocabulary work; text generation with the intention of copying and pasting it into one’s own work is very rare.

Respondents often treat GenAI as an additional source of support in self-learning, for instance, when preparing for exams or practising language skills.

These practices differ by discipline, with students of linguistics reporting the use of GenAI more often than those in literary studies.

Both respondents who do not use GenAI and those who use it for study purposes express concerns about the impact of these tools on professional development and academic integrity. A large number of respondents are also acutely aware of copyright, environmental, and social issues associated with GenAI use.

For our respondents, the main ethical boundary in using GenAI for study purposes lies between refining one’s own text and replacing one’s own work.

Importantly, because the response rate was low (17%), these findings cannot be generalised to all English-major students in the studied context. Still, they provide some insight into the diversity of attitudes towards the use of GenAI in higher education. They also seem to challenge the view that students enthusiastically and uncritically adopt these tools, and that they use them primarily to avoid work.

Jakubowski, D., & Warchał, K.
