Cognitive Linguistics in the Year 2026: Concept creep on TikTok

At the Cognitive Linguistics in the Year 2026: Interdisciplinarity – Interfaces, Implications, Applications in Gdańsk, Jan Zalega had the privilege of presenting a paper titled “Distorted Echoes of Narcissus: A Corpus-Based Study of Concept Creep in the Representation of Narcissistic Personality Disorder on TikTok.” The presentation examined concept creep in representations and understandings of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) on TikTok. Jan Zalega presented both quantitative and qualitative findings from his corpus. He discussed how TikTok content creators portray NPD, how the concept’s meaning has expanded on the platform, and which new lexical items have emerged to denote narcissism. He also presented some of the most interesting examples of concept creep found in the corpus.
