We are pleased to announce that our member, Jan Zalega, has published an article titled “External Lexical Influences in the English Language from Antiquity to Modern Times”
The article provides a concise yet comprehensive overview of how English has been shaped through sustained contact with other languages over the centuries. It takes into account the historical, social, and geopolitical contexts, tracing lexical development from the earliest Celtic and Roman influences through Scandinavian, French, and later global contributions. Special attention is given to the proportion of foreign-derived vocabulary that is now fully integrated into English, as well as to less obvious, minor sources of borrowing. The paper demonstrates how external forces have enriched the English language, making it a dynamic and interesting language.
