At the 11th Biennial International Conference on the Linguistics of Contemporary English in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, Jan Zalega presented a paper titled “Trauma Dumping about Narcissistic Mothers: An Exploratory Study of Concept Creep in Subreddit Discussions.” The presentation focused on concept creep in digital discourse, based on Reddit. The author discussed both quantitative and qualitative findings from the corpus. The first stage of the analysis illustrated which of the three emotionally salient themes (family conflict, relationship/dating, venting/QA) incorporated psychiatric and harm-related terminology most frequently. Jan Zalega also conducted a qualitative analysis of the material and presented the most interesting instances of concept creep occurring on the Reddit platform.
