In the chapter “Research results announcements online: Actors and genres in the processes of parallel knowledge entextualisation” – recently published in the volume Digital Genres for Academic and Professional Communication, edited by Oana Maria Carciu and Rosana Villares – Krystyna Warchał examines the role of parallel entextualisation in online science communication. Parallel entextualisation is understood here as the presentation of new knowledge in interrelated, hyperlinked, and simultaneously published texts that communicate the same research findings first-hand to diverse audiences.
Using a case-study approach, the chapter analyses the announcement of a breakthrough in fusion ignition research. The breakthrough is presented by different actors and disseminated online through multiple genres and platforms, including a press conference video, a panel discussion video, an online press release, a website news article, a short-form video, and a scientific article. The study addresses the following questions: How do different actors shape the way these texts unfold to communicate their message? How are knowledge contributions entextualised across these texts? Drawing on Hyland’s (2010) model of proximity, the study shows that the use of different genres, modes, and actors allows these texts to complement one another and reach the broadest possible audience. The chapter also demonstrates that parallel entextualisation transforms the traditional model of knowledge flow. Instead of reaching the wider public only after circulating within academia, new knowledge can now be communicated in a way that promotes access to knowledge, encourages citizen involvement and informed decision-making, and blurs the boundaries between experts and other audiences.
